Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of SAUNI project today at Dhrol taluka in Jamnagar district. SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran for Irrigation). Modi will also address a huge gathering at Sanosara town. Around 700 state transport buses and 200 private buses will transport people to the place.
In addition, for the inauguration of phase-I of link-I of SAUNI, the state irrigation department has assigned a budget worth Rs 5 cr. It is to fill up 115 dams of Saurashtra with Narmada water and it’s a part of Modi’s ambitious schemes.
Probably, the predicted cost of this project is Rs 12,000 crores. It is estimated that this project will quench the need for proper irrigation and water supply.
At 09.45 am preparations begun at the venue.
Modi tweeted, “looking forward to being in Gujarat today for the launch of SAUNI Yojana. This scheme will truly benefit the people of Gujarat,” ahead of the inauguration.
Seems like, by December 2016, phase 1 work on Links II, III, and IV is expected to be over. For completing the entire project, the government has set the deadline of December 2019.
While, many parts of Saurashtra are likely to drought, and also, irrigation water is a politically tender issue there.
“Water from the Narmada would fill nearly ten dams of three districts ,” Rajkot district Collector Vikrant Pandey said.
Furthermore, Pandey said that they are expecting around 80,000 people to attend the Narendra Modi’s public rally. He also added that all preparations have been done and police also have made security arrangements for the PM’s security.
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, his predecessor Anandiben Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel, ministers of Gujarat government might come. So, a special dome has been set up using German technology.
BJP’s Saurashtra-Kutch spokesperson and vice chairman of Yatradham Vikas Board, Rajubhai Dhruve, said with this project, that region would witness the green revolution. Dhruve claimed that this would probably be the first project in the country to be announced and implemented within four years. Dhruve added that once the project would get completed, irrigation through the water from Narmada river benefits nearly 10,22,589 acres of farming land.
Calling it a little ”lollipop” for farmers,’ Congress attacked Modi’s scheduled visit to Gujarat on Monday.
Senior Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela accused him of making “false promises” ahead of every election. So, on August 29 he claimed Modi was coming to inaugurate a project with an eye on next year’s Assembly polls. Keeping in mind the elections, he also added that Modi is known to make false promises . He had announced SAUNI in 2012 while he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Rajkot PAAS convener Brijesh Patel, said they want clarification from Modi on his silence on the offences committed on Patels during last year’s excitement for reservation.
“If we are given permission by authorities to meet and hand him over a notice we do not want to disrupt the program . PAAS members will rally outside the venue if we are denied permission,” said Brijesh, a close associate of quota stir spearhead Hardik Patel.
